Book of the Week {1}

This is something new that I will be doing on Sweeping Me. I decided to have a Book of the Week. Every week I will have a book spotlight of a book that I have read or just think I will enjoy reading and post about it here on the blog. Just a basic spotlight of it and then the book will be posted to my side bar for the week. It will be random and every Sunday/Monday I will be posting a new one!

This week’s Book of the Week is:

Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake

Blurb: It’s been months since the ghost of Anna Korlov opened a door to Hell in her basement and disappeared into it, but ghost-hunter Cas Lowood can’t move on.

His friends remind him that Anna sacrificed herself so that Cas could live—not walk around half dead. He knows they’re right, but in Cas’s eyes, no living girl he meets can compare to the dead girl he fell in love with.

Now he’s seeing Anna everywhere: sometimes when he’s asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. But something is very wrong…these aren’t just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears.

Cas doesn’t know what happened to Anna when she disappeared into Hell, but he knows she doesn’t deserve whatever is happening to her now. Anna saved Cas more than once, and it’s time for him to return the favor.

Release date is set for August 2012.

Blog Tour: Gabriel’s Gate by Tom Galvin Review

Title: Gabriel’s Gate
Author: Tom Galvin
Publisher: Book Republic
Publication Date: October 2011
Pages: 301 pages
Genre: Drama, Ireland Fiction

Book Description:
In 2010, when the recession took root in Ireland, the young people looked at the ground they were standing on and realised it was rotten. Rotten in so many ways, but especially in the ways made by man. So most decided it was time to do what their forefathers had done during times of famine, when the ground was rotten too, and leave. For America. And Newfoundland. And Australia. And Canada.

But in the winter of 2010, a group of college students had a different idea. They weren’t going to leave. They would simply find a patch of land that hadn’t been contaminated and live off it. Just like their forefathers had always done before the land became rotten and the country corrupted by greed. This is their story.

Dot-to-Dot Children’s Books is celebrating #EarthDay! #Win a set (8) #books about endangered species! #Giveaway

Have I got a great Earth Day giveaway for you. Dot-to-Dot Children’s Books is celebrating Earth Day with Books!!! These books are lovely with colorful charcters and packed with infromation on the animals and area the anmimals are from. We have been reading these books every night and both my girls love them. We can’t help but be intrigued with the elephants or the chimps from these books. My youngest daughter wants to be a veterinarian and these books are just delightful for her. I love the illistrations and the history of what part of the world the animals come from and the area they live in.

Some information on the books origins:
However, these books are more than just, well, books! They are books with heart. Each of the eight books in the series were written by women and school children from Afghanistan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Republic of Congo, and Nicaragua — their stories are a call for increased awareness for an endangered species in their country. Working together with a number of not-for-profit partners that provide support to the women and children in these countries (like the Somaly Mam Foundation, Wildlife Conservation Society and Help the Afghan Children to name just a few) Dot-to-Dot Children’s Books donates all proceeds from book sales to directly fund the organizations working to empower these woman and children and protect endangered species in the featured countries.

Here is some information on these great books:
Books in the series include:
* Yara’s Amazing Nose – Learn how a nose transforms an identity and a friendship for one of the most unique creatures in the animal kingdom – the lowland tapir!
* Carey’s First Day – Follow Carey the hawksbill sea turtle as he navigates the hazardous journey from his nest to his future home in the open ocean.
* When Honey the Tiger Flew – Written by the courageous participants in the Somaly Mam Foundation’s Voices for Change program, When Honey the Tiger Flew is the story of a young
tiger who, through determination and ingenuity, rescues his mother.
* The Snow Leopard Dream – Under blue skies dotted by clouds in a remote region, a young girl overcomes her fears and befriends a snow leopard.
* Ndeze and Ndakasi’s New Home – Two orphan mountain gorillas learn the ways of the world as they find a new home.
* Sam Learns Some Lessons – Using the wisdom of elders, a herd of elephants cope with a water shortage.
* Shuba and the Cyclone – A river dolphin loses her way after a cyclone and a crocodile becomes an accidental hero.
* Kajo and Akari’s New Friend – Seeking adventure, brother chimpanzees chase a butterfly through the forest.
